On Saturday, November 19, 2016, the Redwood Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California (BCHC) in partnership with Food for People, the Food Bank for Humboldt County, will kick off the 24th annual Holiday Spirit Food & Fund Drive in true cowboy fashion. Come rain or shine, the Redwood Unit will deliver non-perishable food donations via pack train to Food for People.
The Cowboy Canned Food Convoy will begin at noon at the Eureka Boardwalk parking lot, at the foot of D Street, and will then follow D Street to 2nd Street and head west along 2nd Street to 37 W. 2nd Street, behind Living Styles, where a Food for People van will collect the Convoy’s food. The return route will be the same. Please map on next page. Representatives from the Redwood Unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California and Food for People will be available for interviews after the convoy reaches its destination.
Food for People coordinates the Holiday Spirit Food & Fund Drive on behalf of its network of 16 food pantries countywide; all the food that is collected within a community stays in that community to help feed local residents in need. Food collection barrels are located in the towns of Arcata, Blue Lake, Bridgeville, Carlotta, Dinsmore, Eureka, Ferndale, Fortuna, Garberville, Hoopa, McKinleyville, Rio Dell, Scotia, Trinidad, and Willow Creek. Food for People’s holiday collection bag, which is distributed the week of thanksgiving in the Times Standard, lists the 50+ barrel collection sites around the county. The list is also available at www.foodforpeople.org.
Another popular component of the Holiday Spirit Food & Fund Drive is the Hunger Fighter Challenge, a friendly competition between local teams to see who can collect the most food and funds to help feed our community. The Redwood Unit will be the first Hunger Fighter team to have their donation weighed in—officially kicking off the Holiday Spirit Food & Fund Drive. See the Food for People website for more information on becoming a Hunger Fighter Team.
Food for People staff will provide press packets at the event including media release, relevant food drive information, and information about the Redwood Unit of the BCHC.
