Food for Peoples Gleaning Program on Northcoast News

Food for People, the local food bank for Humboldt County, is looking forward to yet another great year of working with these local growers and gardeners through their Gleaning Program, and Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign. Last year alone, Food for People’s gleaning program collected over 84,000 pounds of produce and meat from farms, gardens and ranches throughout Humboldt County.  The Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign is a nation-wide, people-helping-people program sponsored by the Garden Writers Association.  This campaign, facilitated locally by Food for People, is a simple way for all backyard gardeners to pitch in and provide food relief for folks in need.

In addition to donations from local residents through the Plant a Row for the Hungry campaign, Food for People works hard year round to secure donations from local farmers and producers as well.  So what is it that makes the gleaning program so successful?  Aside from all the generous farmers who take the time to participate, efforts would be wasted if it wasn’t for the help of volunteer gleaners!  Volunteers are an absolutely vital part of the program’s overall mission and success—volunteer gleaners help harvest produce from farms and gardens, harvest and prune neighborhood fruit trees, and pickup produce donations from local farmers markets to bring back to the food bank for distribution.  Because of these folks, Food for People is able to cover more ground, which in turn brings in more fresh and local food for the households served.

Deep Seeded Farm in Arcata is one example of a local farm that actively participates in Food for People’s gleaning program.  Farmer Eddie Tanner invites volunteers to come weekly and help pick up the leftover produce from his Community Supported Agriculture program, or to get dirty in the fields and harvest extra produce.  This type of community exchange is just one part of what makes this program so rewarding!
