Did you know that 60% of Humboldt County children qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch during the school year?
And that nearly 10,000 children in Humboldt County live at or below the federal poverty line?
For many of those children, access to adequate, nutritious food can be a challenge – especially on the weekends when school lunches are not available.
Children who experience food insecurity face a greater risk of fatigue, concentration problems, emotional stress and poor school performance.
To help those students thrive, Food for People started Backpacks for Kids.Every Friday during the school year, Backpacks for Kids provides children who are considered at-risk for hunger over the weekend with a bag of food.
Each bag contains enough food to cover breakfast, lunch and dinner (plus snacks) over two days.
Started in 2006 with just three school sites, today the program serves more than 550 children a week, at 35 different schools.
Schools that distribute backpacks have noticed fewer behavioral problems, less anxiety and that students no longer complaining of hunger on Monday morning.
By providing adequate nutrition, our hope is that each child in Humboldt County will have opportunity to reach their potential.
