Food for People is proud to announce the recent award of a $1,000 Community Blooms grant from Wells Fargo Advisors to benefit the Backpacks for Kids weekend nutrition program. Food for People was generously selected by our local Wells Fargo Advisors branch as their partner in our 2015 Community Blooms Volunteer Grant Program. Under this program, Wells Fargo Advisors branches and nonprofits work together to help address needs in local communities across the United States. Support for this grant was provided by Wells Fargo Foundation in cooperation with Wells Fargo Advisors, www.wellsfargoadvisors.com/community.
More than 50% of school children in Humboldt County are enrolled in the free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs when school is in session, but this food is not available on the weekends. The Backpacks for Kids program has been in operation since 2006 and provides a bag full of nutritious, kid-friendly food every Friday during the school year for local children living at risk for hunger. School teachers and administrators report that children who receive the weekend food packages no longer complain of hunger on Monday mornings and have fewer problems with attendance, concentration and behavior after participating in the Backpacks for Kids program.
In the above picture Anne Holcomb, Executive Director of Food for People, accepts $1,000 from the staff at Wells Fargo Advisors in above photo. The donation will provide weekend hunger relief for local school children through Food for People’s Backpacks for Kids program.
