New EBT Chip/Tap Cards

Did you get yours?

The State mailed new replacement EBT chip/tap cards to active card users between February and April 2025. The new card has updated security features to help reduce instances of fraud and stolen benefits.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, the new EBT card has a small microchip embedded in the card. When the EBT card is inserted in the Point of Sale device at the grocery store, the chip will generate a special code that can only be used for that transaction.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, the new EBT card also features β€œTap to pay.” Make a purchase by holding or tapping the card on a contactless-enabled card reader.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, there is a 3-digit Card Security Code on the back of the card, used to complete some online purchases.

  • The state has upgraded all EBT cards with these security measures to address benefit theft through skimming and scamming and is working to get stores ready for the change.

  • For assistance with your new card, use the Client Customer Service Number located on the back of the card 1-877-328-9677.

  • All existing benefits transferred automatically to your new EBT card, and your PIN stays the same. A successful transaction with the new card will activate it.

  • You have approximately 180 days after issuance to activate your replacement card.

  • Some EBT retailers may not accept tap or chip features at this time. Please try to use the tap or chip feature first, and then swipe if prompted.

What if you never received the replacement card in the mail?

  • New EBT cards were sent out to active card users between February and April 2025, and the old cards without chips officially stop working 180 days after the new cards are sent. If you did not receive a replacement chip/tap card, and your benefits have stopped working, this could be why. You can request assistance by doing one of the following:
