New EBT Chip/Tap Cards Coming Soon!

If you currently have an EBT card, you will be receiving a new one in the mail in 2025. The new card will have some updated security features to help reduce instances of fraud and stolen benefits.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, the new EBT card will have a small microchip embedded in the card. When the EBT card is inserted in the Point of Sale device at the grocery store, the chip will generate a special code that can only be used for that transaction.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, the new EBT card will also feature β€œTap to pay.” Make a purchase by holding or tapping the card on a contactless-enabled card reader.

  • Similar to credit and debit cards, there will be a 3-digit Card Security Code on the back of the card, used to complete some online purchases.

  • The state is upgrading all EBT cards with these security measures to address benefit theft through skimming and scamming and is working to get stores ready for the change.

  • For assistance with your new card, use the Client Customer Service Number located on the back of the card 1-877-328-9677.

  • Check your mailbox often for your new card. You do NOT need to visit a County office to receive your card and do NOT need to call to activate your new card. All existing benefits will transfer automatically to your new EBT card and your PIN will stay the same. A successful transaction with the new card will activate it.

  • You will have approximately 180 days after issuance to activate your replacement card.

  • Some EBT retailers may not accept tap or chip features at this time. Please try to use the tap or chip feature first and then swipe if prompted.
